We are delighted to announce that the Homestead Robotics team has received recognition at the FRC Bay Area Awards Show with the “Engineering Design” Award! After brainstorming dozens of ideas and themes, the game design team finally decided on “High Seas”, a pirate-themed game. The objective of the game is to find and store treasure in each alliance’s treasure chest on their mother ship. While designing the game, we kept in mind our goals of having high audience engagement, providing a challenge to all teams, and including an element of uniqueness in our game mechanics.
While finalizing our submission, we wove our ideas for the style, physical elements, and theme into one cohesive FRC game. We achieved this by first sketching out a game field, incorporating these aspects into the game, then confirming that our theme still worked well with the style. Once the details were thought out, we finalized the layout for the field. In the process, we made several manual simulations in order to make crucial decisions and maintain the quality of the game. In the end, we created a CAD model of our field and had a complete version of “High Seas”! After presenting our ideas, the team won an award for its excellent engineering in the design process.
